History of the Valley Homes community 1943-1954

To help alleviate the wartime housing shortage for defense and shipyard workers, 372 units were built at the corner of Big Sewickley Creek and Turkeyfoot roads. The neighborhood featured a general store and community center. Though intended as temporary housing, the Valley Homes community remained open until 1954 to house returning veterans and their young families. The homes were razed and the site has remained an open field.
