Opening Day ceremonies for the Owen “The World” Galluzzo Memorial Wiffle Ball Field

Thursday, September 5, 2019 | 6:52 AM

Last summer you folks covered the story of my son, Joey Coyle pitching the mayor and Sewickley Council on his idea of converting vacant land on Waterworks Road to a wiffle ball field honoring Owen Galluzzo, a young classmate, neighbor, teammate and really cool kid, who had died at the age of 9 of a chronic heart condition. A picnic and wiffle ball tournament in Owen’s name happens every Labor Day to raise money for children who have similar conditions.

The field was meant to convert vacant space, an unofficial dumping ground for borough contractors into a usable play area for neighborhood kids to play wiffle ball, a game Owen loved.

Opening Day ceremonies will commence at 4:30 PM on September 7 at 1 Waterworks Rd. The mayor is expected to attend and possibly some council members. There also may be representatives of our sponsors, First National Bank and Dick’s Sporting Goods, along with local merchants and Sewickley residents who have supported us financially and otherwise.

The ceremony will include brief thank yous to our sponsors, donors, the mayor and the borough, friends and neighbors. A hand painted sign honoring the memory of Owen and dedicating the field to his memory will be unveiled followed by a pickup wiffle ball game.

I hope you find this event news worthy. For more information, please call me at 412-596-6566.
