May is Military Appreciation Month

Monday, May 11, 2020 | 2:33 PM

May is Military Appreciation Month, a time to honor and thank active duty military, reservists and guardsmen for their service as well as recognizing the important role of military families. This week is designated as Armed Forces Week. First celebrated in May 1950, the time was used to commemorate the coming together of the five armed services into the newly created Department of Defense. The week culminates in Armed Forces Day, held on the third Saturday of May. Included in this special month is Memorial Day when we are reminded to remember and honor the men and women who lost their lives while in service to our nation. Military life is very different from the lives most of us enjoy and it is sometimes difficult for us to fully understand the sacrifices the military and their families must make. Please join in thanking those who serve.
