The unparalleled Ben-Hur epic will screen in all of its 3 1/2 hour glory as the closer for the summer season at The Tull Family Theater, 418 Walnut St., Sewickley. The screening starts at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20, and includes an intermission.
Charlton Heston stars in the title role, as he is betrayed, regains his freedom and returns for revenge.
Ben-Hur was the first film to win 11 Academy Awards, including best picture, actor, supporting actor, director, cinematography, editing, music, art direction, costume design and special effects—since tied twice but not surpassed.
The Hollywood Reporter calls Ben-Hur “An extraordinary motion picture, greater in dimension and significance than any similar film of our time. … More importantly, it is at the same time a highly rewarding dramatic experience, rich and complex in human values: a great adventure, full of excitement, visual beauty, thrills and unsurpassed cinema artistry.”
The chariot racing scene, with Charlton Heston as Ben-Hur and Stephen Boyd as his frenemy, Messala, still receives applause as one of the best action sequences in filmdom. Variety dubs it “the finest example of the use of the motion picture camera to record an action sequence.”
