A woman is getting ready to go out — maybe she’s meeting friends for a night out or going to dinner with her husband and a few coworkers.
She’s selected her best outfit, the one that makes her feel like a million bucks, painted her nails and applied her makeup. The problem is her hair. She’s spent an hour trying to fix it, but it still doesn’t look the way she had hoped.
That’s where Glow Blotique comes in. With its motto, “No excuse for a bad hair day,” the salon provides services to make any woman feel their best for any occasion — from a regular work day to their wedding day and every day in between.
“Women know, when your hair looks good, you can take on the world,” said Glow Blotique owner Aimee Vickers.
Vickers opened the shop, at 541 Beaver St., Sewickley, three years ago. Taking note of the popularity of blow-dry bars in other cities, she wanted to bring the concept to the Pittsburgh area.
Glow specializes in professional blowouts — no cuts or color — and styling. Clients can get the full service, including wash, blow-dry and style, or come in with wet or dry hair and have a professional style it.
“I was thinking back to a time, like in the 1950s, when women would go and get their hair done, and it was a social thing,” Vickers said. “They can have a glass of champagne and have a little self-care.”
In addition to blow-dry and style, services include scalp massages, updos, braids, hair treatments, extensions, spray tanning and makeup.
The blotique caters to brides and provides styling for special events, but they also serve women who just want to have their hair look great any day of the week.
“We do take walk-ins. It doesn’t have to be a special event,” Vickers said. “If you’re going somewhere and you want to feel good, it pulls your look together.”
Vickers said clients love the convenience of walking in, relaxing while the work is done for them, and walking out with a gorgeous head of hair. Even those who at one time couldn’t imagine partaking of such a service now can’t imagine their lives without it.
Susan Kinser of Sewickley said Glow came into her life at the right time. She had just gotten engaged and was looking for a salon for the events surrounding her wedding.
“I was their first bride,” she said. “They opened on a Sunday over Memorial Day weekend and pulled out all of the stops. They treated all of my guests like they were the bride. Everyone was treated as someone of honor, and that meant a lot to me.”
Now married to Ron and mother to 1-year-old Crawford, Kinser said she continued to go back to Glow for the unparalleled service and nurtured friendships.
“I’ve felt like they’ve been with me, celebrating life events right alongside me,” she said. “I go weekly or biweekly. It’s a treat to have someone take care of me. As a new mother, having that service was amazing. When I had the baby, a stylist would hold my baby while another one took care of me.”
Kinser said the Glow staff takes the time to make each client feel special.
“It’s a real gem to have in Sewickley,” she said. “It’s not expensive and it doesn’t take too much time because you’re not competing with someone who is there for a two-hour cut and color.”
Kinser is a Glow member, which allows her to save on services and merchandise. Memberships range from $75 to $215 and include two blowouts and a scalp massage up to six blowouts and three scalp massages per month. Clients also save on packages for three, six or 12 blowouts.
Vickers has created a space that is luxurious yet welcoming and comfortable. The serene setting includes soft lighting and mixed metal accents, all complemented by a “glowing” wall painted by local artist Thressia Kriebel.
In addition to services in which high-end products such as Oribe and Kevin Murphy are used, the shop’s merchandise line is expanding to include more makeup, jewelry, handbags, hair accessories and gift sets and certificates. The space also can be rented out for special events.
Vickers and her staff relish the relationships they have cultivated and love when a new face comes through the door.
“We want to provide a wonderful and relaxing service,” she said, “and have women walking out looking and feeling great.”
