Sewickley Bridge prep work to begin this week

Prep work on the Sewickley Bridge renovation project is scheduled to begin Wednesday.

Single-lane alternating traffic will occur weekdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. through mid-June, PennDOT announced Monday.

Swank Construction Company LLC, will conduct this first phase of work, including shield installation and drilling for beam locations on the $3.69 million project.

The actual preservation work on the bridge will include a deck overlay, bearing and deck joint replacement. The overall project is anticipated to conclude in late fall 2020.

Project Manager Jason O’Neil delivered a presentation of the proposal to the community in August. He said work would be done to the truss bridge — which was built in 1981 and is used by about 20,000 commuters daily — to extend its life and give commuters a smoother ride.

Initial plans included weekend closures, and one 10-to-14-day full closure of the bridge.

PennDOT said Monday that more information, including work hours and restrictions, will be provided prior to the start of the preservation work.
