Sewickley Academy girls basketball team caps section slate with victory.

The Sewickley Academy girls basketball team, with the help of Thursday’s 42-35 victory over Eden Christian, finished in a three-way tie in the Section 1-1A standings with Quigley Catholic and Vincentian Academy at 8-4.
The teams wrapped up the second, third and fourth spots from the section to the WPIAL playoffs. Each of the three teams went a combined 2-2 against the others.
Rochester finished 11-1 and captured the section title.
QV girls punch ticket to postseason
A close game was nothing new for the Quaker Valley girls basketball team, so it knew what to expect when it played the final few minutes of Thursday’s Section 2-4A game at Ambridge.
With the final WPIAL playoff spot from the section on the line, the Quakers pulled out a winner-take-all 45-43 victory over the Bridgers.
QV (11-9, 5-7) will find out who it will play in the first round, including the date, time and location, Tuesday evening when the WPIAL basketball committee unveils the brackets.
Combined swimming and diving teams split with Hopewell
The Quaker Valley/Sewickley Academy combined swimming and diving teams split a Section 2-AA meet with Hopewell on Thursday.
The boys team beat the Vikings 53-27 to improve to 4-3 in the section, while the girls fell 51-43 and now are 5-2 in section action.
The teams will compete at the Midwestern Athletic Conference swimming and diving championships Friday and Saturday at Moon High School.
They conclude their section schedules Thursday at 4 p.m. on senior night at the Sewickley Valley YMCA.
The WPIAL diving championships are Feb. 22 at South Park High School. The swimming championships are Feb. 28 and March 1 at Pitt’s Trees Pool.
