School: Sewickley Academy
Claim to fame: Nick Wilson must seem larger than life to opponents — the Panthers goalkeeper hasn’t allowed more than two goals in a game in the team’s last 24 contests.
Last week, Wilson helped lead Sewickley Academy to a pair of wins, one of which was his second shutout of the season.
How did you become a goalkeeper?
My sister Theresa was a goalkeeper in middle school, and when I saw her playing I was really inspired by her work ethic. I decided to play it in middle school. She has inspired me on so many levels, and I’m grateful for her for that.
Who’s the best goalkeeper in the family?
Oh, that’s a good question. I don’t really know. We should do a competition someday.
For those who don’t get to see you play, how would you describe your approach in net?
I would say that I stay calm and confident. That’s the key.
What do you enjoy most about being a goalkeeper?
I enjoy working with my teammates a lot. It’s great building connections with them from the beginning of the season to the end of the season. We have to work together through the tough times, and you always have to get better.
You recently had your second shutout of the season. Who contributes a lot defensively to help make that happen?
The whole back line together. That’s Will Stevenson, Josh Chico, Adin Zorn, Brandon Thompson and Jeremy Gu. They have been phenomenal.
What will be key for this team going to the playoffs and making a deep run?
I think focusing every game and giving 100 percent every game is key.
Outside of playing soccer, what do you enjoy?
I enjoy hanging out with friends and always learning in school. I love school. I’m very interested in math and science, and hopefully later on in college I’ll get into engineering.
