Claim to fame: Bre Warner could see herself demanding justice in the court of law as a defense attorney. For now, she commands respect on the court, especially when she’s in the paint. Warner has averaged 8 points and 7 rebounds in her last four games.
What has led to your recent hot streak?
I think it all starts with the communication on our team and a lack of selfishness. We work together well and honestly don’t think about stats or how much we’ve scored. We really think about being one pass ahead and when we should give up a shot for someone else to take a better shot.
It is common for scoring to be nearly evenly distributed among Panthers in any given game. Is that the goal on offense?
Oh, yeah. It’s exactly what we do. Everyone has a chance to make a play. Everyone has a chance to score. We more or less look for who is the most open player, and whoever that is takes their shot.
What shot have you worked on this year to expand your game?
Everyone likes to practice lay-ups and 3-point shots, but I kind of want to focus on the midrange. You really don’t practice that too often. My coach has been really working with me on that.
If there’s one more part of your game you’d love to improve, what would it be?
Probably outside shooting and getting more comfortable outside. I’m normally a post player, and recently they’ve positioned me more outside to get me more confident in that position to be more of an all-around player.
There are no seniors on this team. How have you stepped up as a leader?
I think everyone looks up to all four juniors as if we’re seniors. We’ve been through years of coaching and years of playing together through AAU and other organizations. We took on leadership roles quickly and made sure we were there for the underclassmen.
What else do you enjoy at Sewickley Academy?
I like learning about law and other languages like (American Sign Language) and Latin. I like going to summer law camps. I just picked up soccer last fall and played goalie. I liked the team, and it was cool being in a different sport.
Did you pick up anything in soccer that helped in basketball?
Oh, definitely. Diving for balls and jumping for high shots really translates to rebounding and getting loose balls on the court.
