Quaker Valley, Sewickley Academy students nominated for Gene Kelly Awards

And the nominees are …

Pittsburgh CLO has announced the nominees for the 29th annual Gene Kelly Awards for Excellence in High School Musical Theater.

Patterned after Broadway’s Tony Awards, the event will begin at 7:30 p.m. May 25 in the Benedum Center, 237 Seventh St., and will celebrate the achievements of high school students and their schools’ musical theater programs.

This year’s best actor and best actress winners will travel to New York City to represent Pittsburgh in the Jimmy Awards on June 24.

Sewickley Academy’s Eric Dickey is nominated for best actor for is role as Beast in “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.” Quaker Valley’s Ruby Sevcik is up for best actress for her portrayal of Fiona in “Shrek The Musical,” and her colleague Angel Palladini, who played Dragon in the musical, is nominated for best supporting actress.

In addition to more than 20 Kelly Awards presented at the event, several cash and university scholarships will be awarded.

A panel of 42 judges attended performances by 33 Allegheny County high schools: Avonworth, Baldwin, Bishop Canevin, Brentwood, Central Catholic and Oakland Catholic, Chartiers Valley, Deer Lakes, Elizabeth Forward, Hampton, Keystone Oaks, Montour, Moon Area, North Hills, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Penn Hills, Pine-Richland, Pittsburgh Allderdice, Pittsburgh Brashear, Pittsburgh CAPA, Plum, Propel Braddock Hills, Quaker Valley, Redeemer Lutheran, Riverview, Saint Joseph, Serra Catholic, Seton-LaSalle Catholic, Sewickley Academy, Springdale Junior-Senior, Steel Valley, West Allegheny, Westinghouse Arts Academy and Woodland Hills.

The judging panel was comprised of performing arts educators, arts administrators, entertainment professionals and performers. On May 3, these judges met and reviewed highlights from each high school performance. The scoring was then tabulated by Deloitte LLP, according to the CLO.
