Claim to fame: Franky Fernandez played a key role in two close wins last week with two goals and two assists to keep Quaker Valley’s season alive.
The Quakers played Tuesday against Mercyhurst Prep for a spot in the PIAA championship game.
How much have you enjoyed Quaker Valley’s 21-game win streak?
It’s been a lot of fun with this group to win consistently. It’s been a great time even when we haven’t played our best.
What did it mean to you to win the WPIAL championship your senior year?
It really means a lot. It’s a feeling of relief after being there the past two years and losing in overtime on PKs, so winning it again was a great moment in our senior year.
Do you feel more pressure to win another state title with this being your last chance or less pressure because you’ve played at this stage for four consecutive years?
I think there’s definitely more pressure to get back to the state finals. Our goal has been to win the state finals the whole season.
How special is this senior class that you’ve played with since grade school?
We definitely have a lot of great memories. We have great chemistry together, not even during high school but also through all those years growing up in middle school and club teams. It’s definitely something special that we all enjoy.
What will you remember most about playing soccer at Quaker Valley?
Just the legacy that Quaker Valley soccer has and the bond with every team all four years. Everybody has a role, and the team wouldn’t be whole if we were missing a single person.
Do you plan to play collegiate soccer?
I’m looking to play in college, and I’m talking to a few schools and I’m looking to decide shortly. It’s been a good experience, but it’s also a hard decision for what I want to do, were I want to go and what I’m looking for. My club team and my family has been very helpful, too, so I’ve enjoyed the (recruitment) process.
What do you plan to study?
I want to go into marketing, maybe sports marketing to try to work my way up with a major soccer team.
So, big picture, you’d like to be a lifer in soccer?
If I can, yes, absolutely.
