Quaker Valley and Sewickley Academy athletes arrive at WPIAL track and field championships

Members of the Quaker Valley and Sewickley Academy track and field teams take part in the WPIAL Class AA championships Thursday at Slippery Rock University.

The top five finishers in each event automatically qualify for the PIAA championships May 24 and 25 at Shippensburg University.

Also, those in the top eight who equal or better a pre-set state-qualifying standard also punch tickets to states.

The field events and events on the track begin at 11 a.m.

Quaker Valley boys lacrosse gearing up for quarterfinal match

The Quaker Valley boys lacrosse team begins its quest for a WPIAL Class AA title Thursday against North Hills at 6 p.m. at Hampton High School.

The Quakers, the No. 3 seed, earned a bye into the quarterfinals. North Hills scored a 9-3 win over Knoch in the first round Tuesday.

The top three teams from the WPIAL tournament advance to the PIAA playoffs.

The WPIAL championship game is May 24 at Robert Morris University.

The Quakers won the WPIAL Division II title in 2014.

Sewickley Academy girls lacrosse rolls into quarterfinals

After a dominant first-round victory, the Sewickley Academy girls lacrosse team hopes to upend No. 2 seed Shady Side Academy on Thursday in the WPIAL Class AAA quarterfinals.

The Panthers, the No. 7 seed, topped Peters Township 19-6 Tuesday at Nichols Field.

Shady Side Academy was one of four teams to receive byes into the quarterfinals.

Thursday’s game is at 7:30 p.m. at Shady Side Academy.

The semifinal games are Monday with the championship set for May 23 at Robert Morris University.
