The Little Sewickley Creek South Branch Bridge was closed on Feb. 7 for safety concerns, and will likely remain shut down for at least two years.

The Allegheny County Department of Public Works closed the span on Pink House Road saying it is structurally deficient.

Officials placed a weight limit on the bridge last year after consultants inspected it and determined it was safe only for traffic that weighs less than three tons.

A further inspection this week revealed the bridge had deteriorated, public works officials said in a release.

The bridge carries about 50 vehicles a day and is situated near Fern Hollow Road in Sewickley Heights.

Designs and construction, including permit application and bidding, are expected to take at least two years.

Motorists are suggested to use a detour along Pony Hollow Road back to Fern Hollow.

Public works will announce a construction start date when it is finalized.
