Leet residents can purchase blighted or abandoned properties that abut their own at a reduced cost through an Allegheny County program.

The 2018 Side Yard and Blighted Structure Program is open through Aug. 31.

“If you have a vacant lot next to your property that might have a tax lien, you can apply to purchase it and the county will alleviate the tax issues,” Manager Betsy Rengers said.

The township is one of 56 municipalities in Allegheny County to opt into the program. Leetsdale also is participating.

Rengers said it benefits residents as well as the community.

“We did it last year and had a couple of applications,” she said. “It helps people that might want to expand their property and it takes a blighted lot and puts it back on the tax roll.”

The county will accept up to 60 applications in the order they are received. Applications are limited to one per household.

To be eligible, applicants must be current on their taxes, water, sewage and refuse bills on all properties owned in Allegheny County. Targeted properties must be vacant or have a vacant structure on them.

No payment is required to apply.
