The Edgeworth Borough manager was charged with driving under the influence and reckless driving after a crash earlier this month.

John Schwend, who is also fire chief of the North Hampton fire department, was the driver in a crash that happened around 2 a.m. Dec. 15 in Gibsonia, according to Tribune-Review news partner WPXI.

Schwend’s blood alcohol level was .186 according to the Northern Regional Police Department. The legal limit is .08.

Police said two telephone poles were damaged in the crash.

Schwend and his passenger were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, WPXI reported.

Mayor Gary Smith said Schwend’s status with the borough has not changed.

“(Schwend) contacted me and council members the day of the incident, and told us about the accident,” he said. “On our recommendation, he’s entered into a counseling program. We are all looking forward to him getting back in good health and continuing to work in the borough.”

Smith said the decision was made unanimously by council.

An email to the North Hampton fire department was not returned. A man who answered the department phone said “There is nobody here who will speak about that now,” and hung up.
